Cataract surgery is a procedure that removes the lens of the eye that has become cloudy or opaque due to a cataract. Cataracts are common. Causes can be 1. age-related 2. Traumatic 3. Congenital 4. Disease related 5. Drug use related. This leads to decrease in vision and difficulty with daily activities such as driving, reading, and recognizing faces. Cataract surgery is typically performed as a day care procedure .The procedure is typically performed under local or topical anaesthesia, which numbs the eye and surrounding area, so the patient is awake but comfortable.
During cataract surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eye and removes the cloudy lens. It is usually done with the help of high end advanced machines .The lens is usually replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL) that is inserted into the eye through the same incision. The IOL is designed to restore clear vision and improve the patient's quality of life.
After the surgery, the patient may experience some discomfort, but this usually comes down with use of post op medications. The patient will also need to use eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation and to promote healing.
Patients experience significant improvement in their vision following cataract surgery unless & until complicated by other things. The procedure has a high success rate and is considered safe and effective.
